All types of hooves clacked upon the gorgeous marble tiled floors, as many of the yearlings and foals all hustled to get to class, talking with their friends and bucking, pranking, and all manner of other childish activities with their friends while Clouddapple walked alone. Those happy, frolicking ponies’ happy faces would freeze and melt into frowns and agape jaws of disdain and judgment at Clouddapple’s passing-it was most unusual for a unicorn to have a pegasus’ dappled coat.
Their stares only grew meaner and harsher upon learning Clouddapple’s name, and by extension lower class status, during roll call. The pranks and name calling through whispers of bigoted offspring beat against his emotions like bugs against glass. Clouddapple didn’t care; he was proud of his mother, and he missed her dearly. It had been months since he last saw her. He enjoyed his seat by the window, he could look out and all the taunting would fade away as he imagined himself riding saddlebag-shotgun as his mother showed him the wonders of being a Pegasus.
But that was half of why he was here-to learn a secret spell that his father used on him once-a spell that could temporarily give a pony wings. He wasn’t stupid though, he knew he wouldn’t learn it at this school, nor any school. As his father did, he would learn it from a book. One time, his father gave himself wings and for once, Clouddapple felt like he really could belong in Cloudsdale. But he knew, that was a long time coming. He leaned back in his seat and sighed, listening to the remainder of the lecture on even more bigoted unicorn history.

Emerald Sparkle was absolutely stunned when she found out that there was going to be a unicorn in her class that was part pegasus, having no idea why a unicorn would stoop to such a level to want to have a child with a pegasus. At first, she could not tell who in her class was the offspring of a pegasus, but an older student had quickly pointed out to her that it was the blue unicorn with the strange coat pattern.
While she did not exactly approve of the male being taught at such a prestigious school, she would never have stooped to the level of her classmates by pulling pranks on him. It was absolutely below a unicorn to perform some of the pranks and such that the others were doing to the other foal.
Instead, she decided that ignoring him would be the best option. Her mother would be proud of her diplomatic choice, she felt, so she continued to ignore him during class and focused on the lecture on how unicorns had came up with spells that allowed plants to grow faster than earth ponies could manage.

It wasn't long after sitting back in his seat, that Clouddapple noticed one foal in particular. She had a clean-cut, deep forest green mane and tail, and an exquisite emerald coat he swore even sparkled like the gem. He had seen her before; she was at the court case where his parents became separated... She belonged to the class of important unicorns, one of which his father met in that courtroom and was in turn met with disdain for letting his standards fall so low... So low as to date a pegasus, especially a lower class pegasus. His cheeks began to boil with rage and he flicked his sapphire irises back to her again, and again he was thrust into another memory, the one where he had to say goodbye to his mother... right there in that courtroom... right there he would never see his own mother again... Clouddapple was snapped back into reality when the teacher picked him to attempt the plant growing spell.
Irritably, he walked to the front of the classroom and examining the situation, he must have stood there forever. In the back he heard somepony yell and snort at him to hurry up, and the more painful one, "go back to the rainbow factory, pegasus reject!" The rainbow factory being only a rumor, but one where failed pegasi would go to be turned into rainbows because pegasus had no real magic. Angrily and without hesitation, his horn barely began to glow before he blasted the vegetable with his magic. It grew tot he size of the teacher's desk before he even began tromping back to his seat. But not before he snorted, "Earth ponies may be slower at growing them, but at least they taste better! Isn't it funny how we eat their rich, hard-earned food and they eat our cheap, magical imitation?"
The teacher quickly awarded him a warning after he spoke his peace and rested in his desk. A pony next to him who was equally out-casted due to their lower class mentioned the loss of friends he might have made after that. He didn't care though, in his ideal world everypony would be equal, and he would still have his family.

Emerald was disappointed when she hadn't been called on to perform the growing spell for the class, especially since it was the pegasus foal that was chosen instead to show off the spell. She frowned at how powerful his spell proved to be when they shouldn't be able to grow anything that large this early in their studies, was it because of the comments that their classmates made? Her frown deepened at his snide comment about the things that unicorns grow. She was confused about what he was talking about. Didn't unicorns eat what they grew as well? She wasn't really sure since she had never had to buy anything for herself in her life, not when her family had a chef that handled their food for them.
She ignored the whispers and giggles around her about the pegasus boy as she eyed him curiously, wondering if he knew something that she wasn't aware even existed.

The bell rang, class was over. Clouddapple's irritation nearly melted away completely and he realized the teacher chose him as an example. For better to show the unicorns that anypony, even one with muddied heritage like his could do it; or for worse, to demonstrate that a pureblood was going to be better off than somepony like him. He didn't care which, all he knew was he had made the teacher angry, and he needed to slip by without her noticing him again. He hadn't even considered the lashing he'd get from his sire after this, but he didn't care. He wanted to run away... But there was nowhere to run to, and nopony to receive him.
Of course, someone with his loudly dappled pelt couldn't slink away that easy and the teacher began to lecture him. Maybe he did have bad blood. The unicorns she told off just before him seemed to absorb every word she threw at them, with glazed eyes and open ears. All he wanted to do was get rowdy and buck at her until he could make a break for the door. But he sat quietly, not even pretending to listen while the teacher talked AT him, before she finally let him go. She even teleported the giant vegetable away. Clouddapple couldn't help but be proud; most unicorns his age couldn't even fathom a vegetable that size. His abilities in telekenisis and manipulation/crafting with his magic far surpassed even unicorns years older than him. But he severely dreaded spells involving other ponies, the one time he had ever been successful at something like teleportation and the like, was when he tried to get to Cloudsdale but ended up in a tree crying for his mother to fly up and get him, that was one spell he tried avoiding at all costs.
Clouddapple found himself staring at the blankflank of the green filly. Ugh!! Why is it when I look at her, I think about mom? I miss... I hate that pony! He snorted in her general direction, but quickly gathered himself back up before he trotted out of the crowded hallway. It was lunch time after all.

Emerald tried to stay back a little bit after class had let out in order to catch up to the pegasus pony to talk to him about what had happened in class, but she didn't have much luck since the teacher caught him and then got onto her for dawdling for so long after class had ended. Emerald felt so embarrassed to be reprimanded by the teacher when she actually thought this teacher was a really good one and hurried from the classroom.
She really wanted to find her classmate, Cloud something or another that she couldn't remember, but she had somehow completely lost him in the crowd of everypony heading towards lunch. She really wanted to know about what he had been talking about in class, but there was just so many ponies around! How could she not find such a strange looking pony?

”Wow! I just love when unicorns use magic. The way you and your father’s horn glow and sparkle as you use magic… it’s just so amazing!” Clouddapple’s stomach churned. How he longed for his mother’s soothing voice. He looked around as almost all of the unicorn foals could use magic, and magical clouds of sparkles of varying colors were all around him; to a different race of ponies it might be amazing, but to a unicorn it’s nothing fantastic at all. He sighed, but even as his eyes scanned the crowed lunchroom, a shimmering green pelt caught his eye. ’Not her again.’ and when her blue eyes caught his own, he nearly gagged as he quickly looked away. ’Don’t notice me please.’
